Our Story
Gretchen’s House Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit, was founded in 2021 by the leaders and educators of Gretchen’s House, a Michigan-based community of child development centers who have been leaders in doing what is best for children since 1982.

Gretchen’s House child care centers have gained acclaim for their innovative, research-based, approach in delivering high-quality early education and have helped thousands of children successfully develop social skills, creativity, physical health, and literacy. But they know that access to high quality care is out of reach for many. As the Policy Equity Group puts it, “Child care is a critical service, yet it remains unaffordable for many families, while early childhood providers struggle to earn a livable wage.”
In response to this, the Foundation’s mission is to promote accessible and affordable high-quality early childhood education, and related resources, for families and teaching professionals and thereby advance the intellectual and social development of children.
Gretchen’s House Foundation believes that the highest quality child care depends on several key factors: well-supported teaching professionals, quality learning environments, and affordable and equitable access to childcare. Gretchen’s House Foundation provides grant programs to expand opportunities for high quality education.
